Day 19: Fasting for Strength and Endurance

“But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” – Isaiah 40:31

Fasting is a spiritual discipline that builds strength and endurance, both physically and spiritually. It is during times of fasting that we learn to rely on God’s power rather than our own, drawing on His strength to sustain us. Isaiah 40:31 reminds us that waiting on the Lord renews our strength and equips us to press forward, even in seasons of weariness.

On this nineteenth day of fasting, let’s explore how fasting develops spiritual endurance and draws us closer to the limitless strength of God.

Strength for the Journey

Life often feels like a marathon. There are seasons of joy and momentum, but there are also moments when we feel tired, burdened, or overwhelmed. Fasting teaches us to endure by shifting our reliance from our own abilities to God’s power. It reminds us that His strength is made perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9).

In Matthew 4, Jesus fasted for forty days in the wilderness, a physically and spiritually taxing journey. Yet, it was during this fast that He overcame temptation and emerged ready for His ministry. Jesus’ example shows us that fasting not only builds endurance but also prepares us for the challenges and opportunities ahead.

Fasting Develops Spiritual Endurance

Fasting is not easy, and that’s the point. It stretches us beyond our comfort zones, teaching us to persevere when our flesh wants to give up. This perseverance strengthens our spiritual resolve and deepens our faith.

James 1:2-4 says, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” Fasting is a form of testing, and as we persevere, we grow in spiritual maturity and resilience.

Drawing Strength from God

One of the most profound aspects of fasting is experiencing God’s strength in a tangible way. As we set aside physical nourishment, we find that God becomes our sustenance. He strengthens us in ways that go beyond the physical, renewing our spirit and refreshing our soul.

Psalm 46:1 says, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” When we fast, we learn to depend on His strength moment by moment. This reliance prepares us to face life’s challenges with faith and confidence.

Practical Steps to Build Strength and Endurance During Fasting

  1. Lean on God’s Promises: Meditate on Scriptures that speak of God’s strength and faithfulness, such as Isaiah 40:31, Philippians 4:13, and Psalm 27:14.
  2. Pray for Renewal: Ask God to renew your strength daily, especially when you feel weak or discouraged during the fast.
  3. Focus on the Bigger Picture: Remember that fasting is not about instant results but about long-term spiritual growth and alignment with God’s will.
  4. Take One Day at a Time: Don’t focus on the challenges of tomorrow. Trust God for the grace you need today.
  5. Celebrate Progress: Recognize and thank God for the strength He has given you to continue the fast. Use these moments as reminders of His faithfulness.
